Landscapes
One of the joys of this region is the range of different landscapes in a relatively small area. Southern Marche is bounded by the Adriatic to the east, the sibillini mountains to the west Ascoli Piceno to the south and Matcerata to the north.
From the coast to the mountains is just 30 to 40 or so kilometers and the fall from over 2000m in the Sibillini to sea level has created beautiful green rolling countryside. And of course being historic Italy the towns are virtually all built on the tops of the hills. Italian architects and planners over the ages may have constructed for defense, the glory of God and to satisfy local and individual pride but the result is the magnificent panorama we enjoy today.
The lack of any significant industry other than agriculture in the region has meant there is very little air pollution so in good weather vistas to the east with the Adriatic in the background or to the west where the mountains rise imposingly are only distorted by the rising heat haze.
